Channapatna Lacquerware
Lacquerware of Channapatna (Karnataka) is the most impressive lac-turnery in India. The origin of the craft dates back to a few hundered years when Tipu Sultan invited artisans from Persia to teach this craft to local crafts-men. The little village of channapatna got its own Artists training Center (ATI) about 95 years ago and after Independence the government built 200 houses for the artisans.
Traditionally, Channapatana artisans made wooden toys that are not as popular as they were. IndyaKaleidoscope is exploring this traditional technique and materials and with the help of these artisans we are able to create contemporary designs that are asthetically pleasing and also functional.
