Longpi Pottery (Black Stone Pottery) – Manipur

Among the variety of earthen pots in India, the Manipur pot stands apart for the unusual quality of its surface. The raw material is powdered rock (serpentinite), the pots are made by a “coil method” where they are hand moulded and not thrown on the wheel. Goddess Panthoibi, a counterpart of Goddess Durga, is considered the Goddess of Arts and Crafts, created the first earthen pot. In ancient times, These pots were used only by royal families during religious and special occasions. The black stone pottery is fire proof and is Gas and Microwave friendly. Food cooked in these pots gets a distinctive flavour and hence an enhanced taste. Modern day Longpi pottery has a range of products from cooking pots, tea mugs, beer mugs, nut bowls to trays and serving dishes.
